The hypothalamus located at the back of the head has several functions, including body temperature regulation. It is important to protect your entire head and neck from the sun's rays, to prevent overheating and the risk of sunstroke that may cut your run short!

For some ultra trail races, such as the UTMBⓇ, runners must have mandatory equipment (heatwave kit) before they are allowed to start the race. The primary aim is to ensure your safety in an environment which can be hostile, with varying conditions. Runners are required to carry "heatwave" and "extreme cold" kits. The desert cap or cap with neck panel is included in the heatwave kit that you have to take with you.

You can wet your cap to keep a cool head and stay lucid during the warmest parts of the day. Despite its quick-drying properties, it is designed to stay cool for relatively long periods.
When you feel the sun begin to beat down on the back of your neck, take the detachable panel and fasten it on with the rip-tabs in a few seconds, without losing race time.

Designed for trail runners, the cap visor lifts up for good visibility during uphills. When lowered, it protects your eyesight from direct sunlight.

Kalenji design team members and trail running enthusiasts, Jeremy, Damien, Nicolas and Gaëtan, tested the cap at the Diagonale des Fous event at temperatures above 30 degrees. It also enjoyed unanimous approval when tested at other ultra events in extreme conditions by a range of male and female trail runners!
The result is a comfortable, lightweight cap which stays cool when you wet it and successfully protects your head and neck from the sun.

Although this cap protects you from the sun, the following precautions should be taken before starting a trail run:
- Check the weather forecast so you can bring appropriate equipment.
- Protect the parts of your body that are exposed to the sun throughout the race.
- Wear sunglasses.
- Regularly apply sunscreen.
- Eat and drink at regular intervals.
