Opinel n° 8 with a wild boar engraving
A knife designed for picnics, camping and hunting snacks. Thanks to its size and weight, it is ideal for everyday use: it is the most versatile knife in the Opinel range. The handle features a laser-engraved hunting scene depicting wild boars. Its 8.5 cm blade delivers a superb cut, its wooden handle is comfortable to hold, and the Virobloc® locking system makes it safer to use.
A word about its martensitic stainless steel (part 1 of 2)
Hardness: 55-57 HRC (European origin).
The stainless steel used in OPINEL blades is a grade that has been specially formulated to ensure both high corrosion resistance and excellent mechanical performance.
The blade offers excellent sharpness and high resistance to abrasion (wear and tear), enabling it to withstand regular contact with hard materials such as ceramics before needing to be resharpened.
A word about its martensitic stainless steel (part 2 of 2)
Stainless steel has the advantage of requiring no special maintenance under normal conditions of use, unlike carbon steel. However, it may reach its limits when exposed to harsh environments (acid, salt water, detergents) for prolonged periods.
The handle
It is 10.9 cm long and made of oak. It is a hardwood that is highly resistant to insects and fungi, thanks to its high tannin content. Sourced from French farms, it has a yellow-brown colour with straight, even grain. The handle is varnished to provide better protection against moisture and dirt.
The safety ring
Invented in 1955 by Marcel Opinel, the Virobloc safety ring is fitted to all folding knives from size 06 upwards. Cut from stainless steel, the Virobloc® consists of two parts: a fixed section and a sliding section. In addition to locking the blade in the open position (for safe use), it is now possible to lock the blade in the closed position (for safe transport).
