My First Opinel n° 7
Specially designed for kids, this knife with a rounded tip features an 8cm blade and a varnished handle to protect it from dirt. “My First Opinel” (that’s its name) is the perfect knife for little adventurers, little DIY enthusiasts and little foodies! It’s perfect for whittling sticks, cutting string, carving wood, starting to build a treehouse, or learning to make open sandwiches after a trip to the mountains. There is, however, one knife that really cuts.
A word about its martensitic stainless steel (part 1 of 2)
Hardness: 55-57 HRC (European origin).
The stainless steel used in OPINEL blades is a grade that has been specially formulated to ensure both high corrosion resistance and excellent mechanical performance.
The blade offers excellent sharpness and high resistance to abrasion (wear and tear), enabling it to withstand regular contact with hard materials such as ceramics before needing to be resharpened.
A word about its martensitic stainless steel (part 2 of 2)
Stainless steel has the advantage of requiring no special maintenance under normal conditions of use, unlike carbon steel. However, it may reach its limits when exposed to harsh environments (acid, salt water, detergents) for prolonged periods.
Blade with a rounded tip
The tip of the blade is rounded to ensure greater safety during use. It’s also an ideal blade for spreading.
The handle
It is 10 cm long and made of beech wood. This is the most commonly used wood for making Opinel handles. PEFC-certified, it comes from sustainably managed forests in the Jura and Vercors regions. It is hard, durable and easy to work with. It has a uniform appearance, and its light colour ranges from yellow to pink. It can be recognised by the presence of numerous small dark lines. The handle is varnished to provide better protection against moisture and dirt.
The safety ring
Invented in 1955 by Marcel Opinel, the Virobloc safety ring is fitted to all folding knives from size 06 upwards. Cut from stainless steel, the Virobloc® consists of two parts: a fixed section and a sliding section. In addition to locking the blade in the open position (for safe use), it is now possible to lock the blade in the closed position (for safe transport).
