    What is Thinsulate®?

    It is, first and foremost, a registered trademark of 3M. In practical terms, it is a synthetic insulating material made up of microfibres. The name is a portmanteau of the English words ‘thin’ and ‘insulate’. The microfibres in Thinsulate are about 10 times finer than the fibres in other synthetic insulating materials. The advantage is that they trap much more air in a small space: Thinsulate retains body heat more effectively than thicker fibres.

    Other benefits of this material

    Thinsulate is water-repellent: it absorbs less than 1% of its weight in water. Even in damp conditions or if you're sweating, it retains its insulating properties. It is therefore a reliable choice for long days outdoors in lightweight, chilly weather. Finally, whilst retaining heat, the fibres allow the body’s perspiration to evaporate: this prevents you from feeling stuffy and keeps you 'dry', which is crucial for staying warm during periods of inactivity.
