The wind checker: a useful little accessory!
As any stalker or hide hunter will tell you, the wind is both an ally and an enemy. Why? Because deer, wild boar and other game have a particularly keen sense of smell. They can smell you from a distance, especially if you’re not upwind. Carrying a wind checker is essential if you don’t want the slightest breeze to betray your scent, and therefore your presence to the animals.
What is the practical purpose of a wind indicator?
This practical accessory fits in the palm of your hand: by exerting slight pressure on the bottle, an odourless green powder immediately moves in the direction of the lightest air current. This lets you know which way the wind is blowing, so you can move or reposition yourself accordingly. The goal? Avoid letting the breeze carry your scent to the game’s nostrils.
Our tip
When you set off on your approach, walk silently, slowly, look in your binoculars regularly and use the wind checker every 50-100 metres to make sure you’re always upwind. When the powder spurts out and indicates that the wind has changed direction, don’t hesitate to make a diversion to continue your approach and remain well positioned facing into the wind. Because mastering the wind is the key to successful hunting.
